Regulations Governing the Implementation of Doctoral Degree Examinations

Article 1
In addition to the Detailed Rules for Graduate Degree Examinations and the General Notes promulgated by National Cheng Kung University on March 1, 1991, these Regulations are hereby established.
Article 2
Doctoral students who have passed the qualifying examination, completed all courses and dissertation requirements prescribed by the Ministry of Education and this doctoral program, and whose dissertation meets one of the following criteria, may, within the prescribed period of study and upon approval of the Degree Examination Committee, apply for a recommendation to take the doctoral degree examination:

Publication of one paper as first author in an international journal with an impact factor greater than 5.

Publication of two papers as first author in international journals indexed in SCI (ranked within the top 2,000).

Submission of a doctoral dissertation that has passed review:
The dissertation shall be reviewed by a Degree Committee convened by the student’s advisor. The content of the dissertation must meet a standard equivalent to two publishable papers in international journals. An evaluation report shall be completed, and the dissertation shall be approved through an evaluation review meeting convened by the committee chair.
Article 3
The dissertation must be completed at least one month prior to the oral examination. The completeness of the dissertation shall be reviewed and approved by the Degree Examination Committee, and a recommendation must be granted before the student may proceed to the oral examination.
Article 4
The degree examination consists of a dissertation presentation and an oral examination. The oral examination shall be conducted publicly, with an announcement posted one week in advance.
Article 5
A student who fails the degree examination and whose extended period of study has not yet expired may retake the examination in the following semester or academic year. The retake is limited to one time only.
Article 6
These Regulations shall take effect upon approval by the Institute Affairs Meeting. The same procedure shall apply to any amendments.
